The 'system ki' has been in development for over a decade. Maxime de La Rochefoucauld's (AKA Maxime Rioux) creation involves an infinite number of compositional possibilities which he has demonstrated with his 40 + trance inducing sculptures of sound. Rioux has found a way to use live acoustic instruments in a way that involves no human contact; the results are a transfixing and spiritual experience for the listener and viewer alike.
With ORCHESTRAKI, Rioux's third full-length recording and first for the Storyboard label, he has assembled an orchestra of unique automatons that behave amongst each other differently depending on their creator's instruction. Each member of Rioux's Orchestraki is sent its order through sound frequencies inaudible to the human ear. The intense sound waves react with an attached speaker causing its cone to move dramatically back and forth. Attached to the speaker are Rioux's hand-made firing pins that hit the instrument. The movements of the speaker bring to life dozens of percussive and melodic instruments which are the essence of this full-length recording. Rioux also performs various instruments like a prepared Rhodes and trumpet on Chameau Hongrois or hand claps on Chapati, which are layered over the free flowing rhythm patterns.

Rioux's live performances often add a new and interesting take to his compositions as he will appropriate the instruments native to the region in which he is playing. For example, in preparation for a show in Swaziland, Africa, Rioux spent a few days combing the area for new instruments he could attach to his automatons. What he ended up finding were buckets made by local craftsmen that gave the feel and sound of his music something entirely new. When he performed this spring in Bergen, Norway he managed to track down a special violin native to the country that again, changed the way the instruments spoke to one another.

With ORCHESTRAKI, listeners are led into a melange of cultures filled with hints of traditional and contemporary influences ranging from electronica, psychedelia, world, and roots.

Le 'Système ki' est en constant développement depuis plus de dix ans. Le travail sonore de Maxime Rioux (alias Maxime de La Rochefoucauld) résulte en un nombre infini de possibilités compositionnelles, qu'il décline avec plus de 40 sculptures sonores induisant un effet de transe. Rioux a trouvé une façon originale d'utiliser des instruments acoustiques, activés sans aucun contact humain. Le résultat est une expérience fascinante et presque spirituelle pour le spectateur autant que pour l'auditeur.

Avec ORCHESTRAKI, le troisième album des Automates Ki et le premier présenté sous l'étiquette Storyboard, il a rassemblé un orchestre exceptionnel d'automates qui interagissent selon les instructions du compositeur. Rioux active chaque automate de l'Orchestraki avec des fréquences sonores inaudibles pour l'oreille humaine. Les ondes acoustiques font réagir un haut-parleur, dont le cône est lié à un percuteur qui frappe un instrument acoustique. Les mouvements de va-et-vient du haut-parleur donnent vie à divers instruments mélodiques et de percussions qui constituent l'essence et le cœur de cet album. Rioux réserve ses propres interventions instrumentales pour des moments particuliers. Sur la pièce 'Chameau hongrois', il joue du Fender Rhodes préparé et de la trompette, et il frappe des mains sur 'Chapati'.

Dans ses spectacles à l'étranger, Rioux apporte une touche nouvelle à ses compositions puisqu'il intègre des instruments locaux découverts sur place. Par exemple, en préparation pour un spectacle au Swaziland, en Afrique, Rioux a passé quelques jours en quête de nouveaux instruments qu'il pourrait joindre à ses automates. Il a fini par trouver des seaux, fabriqués par des artisans locaux, qui ont donné un nouveau sens à ses compositions. En spectacle ce printemps à Bergen, il a réussi à trouver un violon norvégien; et de nouveau, ce dernier a changé la couleur sonore de l'orchestre.

Avec ORCHESTRAKI, l'auditeur est plongé dans un mélange de cultures alimenté par des influences empruntant à l'électronique, au psychédélisme et à l'héritage rythmique et sonore de l'humanité.
